Sunderland defender Luke O’Nien and Peterborough United’s attacking midfielder Sammie Szmodics were also up for the award.

But Oliver, who bagged a mightily impressive eight goals for the Gills in March, is the winner.

His manager Steve Evans, meanwhile, is the recipient of the manager of the month award, seeing off competition from Fleetwood Town boss Simon Grayson, who picked up 13 points from six games in March.

Sunderland manager Lee Johnson and Hull City chief Grant McCann were also nominated.

The judging panel for the awards comprised of former Barnsley manager Danny Wilson, Sky Sports EFL expert Don Goodman, EFL communications director Mark Rowan and SkyBet EFL trader Ivor Davies.
