The left-back, who was released by Manchester United back in June, has signed a two-year contract with the Seasiders with the option for a further 12 months.

The 23-year-old has been training with Neil Critchley’s side in recent weeks and performed well in the pre-season friendlies against Everton and Blackburn Rovers.

Prior to that, Mitchell had been training with Blackpool’s League One rivals Sunderland and was previously thought to be a target for Championship side Luton Town.

“I'm excited to be here and looking forward to getting started," Mitchell said of his move.

"Having spent the past few weeks with the club during pre-season, I get the sense this is a good club to be at. There's a strong togetherness in the squad and you can feel that.

"I'm looking forward to the future here and can't wait to see what's to come."

Mitchell, who will provide competition for James Husband at left-back, is known to be a fast and powerful full-back that can also play higher up the pitch.

Having originally joined Manchester United’s academy as a winger after being spotted playing for local side Fletcher Moss Rangers - the same club that nurtured Marcus Rashford - Mitchell was later converted to a full-back.

Mitchell, who joined United’s academy in 2007, made 29 appearances during two loan spells with Scottish side Hearts where his game time was limited by serious injuries.

His one appearance for United’s first-team came during Jose Mourinho’s tenure as manager in a 2-0 win against Crystal Palace in May 2017.

Head coach Neil Critchley added: “Demetri made a great impression both on and off the pitch during his short spell with us and we’re delighted that he has decided to join us permanently.

“He has demonstrated to us that he can fit into the style of play we are trying to install at the club and we feel he will be a really good addition to our squad.

“Coming through the academy at Manchester United, we feel this is the next step in his career and we’re excited to see what he can bring to the team.”
