The Southend Echo are reporting that Chris Powell is keen to strengthen his forward options with the signing of Vassell, which would be a free transfer.

Vassell is one of five Blackpool players who are yet to decide on their futures at Bloomfield Road, with Kelvin Mellor, Dolly Menga, Clark Robertson and Jay Spearing all out-of-contract this summer too.

The 25-year-old finished the season as the club's top scorer despite suffering another injury-plagued campaign, scoring 11 times in 29 games.

That was the second consecutive season Vassell claimed that accolade, having netted 13 in 42 games during Pool's promotion-winning season in League Two.

The striker signed for Blackpool in the summer of 2016 after being released by Peterborough United.

If Vassell were to leave, he would join Colin Daniel and Armand Gnanduillet in exiting the club after turning down new deals.

Daniel, 30, signed for Peterborough United while Gnanduillet penned a deal with South African side Baroka FC.
