Former Blackpool and Portsmouth winger makes League One move as free agent

Sammy Silvera will be up against Blackpool this season after joining MK Dons.

Former Blackpool loanee Sammy Silvera will be up against the Seasiders in League One next season.

Newly-promoted MK Dons added the winger to their ranks on a free transfer at the end of last week following his release from Middlesbrough at the start of the summer.

The Australian last spent time in the third tier while with the Seasiders in the second half of the 2024/25 campaign, but was unable to shine in Tangerine.

While injury did hinder the 25-year-old, the games he did get didn’t offer enough for him to hold down a regular place on the left wing, with just one goal and one assist coming in 15 league outings.

A stint with Portsmouth in the months before his Bloomfield Road arrival had followed a similar pattern.

During a six month stay at Fratton Park, he was unable to register any goal contributions, and endured a tough time in Hampshire.

Despite his struggles away from the Riverside Stadium, another opportunity came his way with Middlesbrough last summer.

After completing 90 minutes Boro’s first three Championship games, game time became more inconsistent as the season progressed, before a foot injury back in February resulted in a two month absence.

The former Central Coast Mariners man was an unused substitute for the Teessiders at Wembley in May’s Championship play-off final, as Kim Hellberg’s side suffered a 1-0 defeat to Hull City.

On the back of that, Middlesbrough announced their retained list, which confirmed Silvera would depart having scored eight goals in 65 appearances across a three-year stay.
