The 53-year-old had previously played in defence and midfield for the Seasiders, making over 200 appearances over six years in the 1990s.

Leeds-born Horner said: "I have a big affiliation with Blackpool after the length of time I’ve been here and that will always be the case.

" I have so many fantastic memories and have worked with some very good managers, coaches, players and people.

“I think now is a good time for a change, though. I’m planning to do a bit more private physiotherapy at the clinic and also get more of a work-life balance."

Horner was a member of the Blackpool team which won promotion from the old division four via the play-offs in 1992.

In his role as physio, he would play a part in four more successful play-off campaigns, including the club's glorious rise to the Premier League a decade ago.

Seasiders owner Simon Sadler said: “Phil has given fantastic service to Blackpool Football Club, both as a player and as a physiotherapist.

"He’s been part of some very successful times in this club’s history and can rightly look back on his achievements with pride.

“In his role as physio, Phil has displayed incredible dedication and commitment to the health, fitness and wellbeing of our professionals, and I know everybody will join us in thanking him for his considerable contribution and wishing him every success for the future. He will always be welcome back here at Bloomfield Road.”

Horner had begun his playing career with Leicester City, then followed legendary Pool manager Billy Ayre to Bloomfield Road from Halifax Town.

On leaving the Seasiders in 1996, Horner ended his playing career at non-league Southport and Lancaster City before completing his degree in physiotherapy and returning to Blackpool in 2000.

Horner added: “The club remains in great hands under the ownership of Simon Sadler and I’d like to wish him, CEO Ben Mansford, head coach Neil Critchley and everybody connected with Blackpool the very best of success for the future. I will always want the club to prosper.”
