It highlights the problems faced by cash-strapped clubs who have loan players on their books but are uncertain if or when the season will resume.

The League Two Bantams stated on Friday: “Given the ongoing uncertainty surrounding the remainder of the 2019/2020 season and its conclusion, Bradford City is in no position to extend the aforementioned deals indefinitely.” Their season should have ended on April 25.

Devitt, 29, had been signed for Blackpool by former boss Terry McPhillips last summer after his Carlisle United contract expired.

He was sent to Bradford on a season-long loan by McPhillips’ successor, Simon Grayson, having never played for the Seasiders.

Brought in when former Seasiders boss Gary Bowyer was in charge at Valley Parade, Devitt managed only six Bradford appearances and was sent off against Cheltenham Town in January.

The former Hull City and Morecambe player is under contract for next season with Blackpool, who have the option to extend his deal for a third year.

Another of the Bantams trio whose loan spells have been ended is former Blackpool midfielder Callum Cooke, now with Peterborough United.
