He said: “I know Gaz won’t mind me saying this, but he’s missed the chance at the end which he’s kicking himself about and apologised to the rest of the boys for.

“But he stuck one away in the first half and I thought he did really well.”

The keeper added: “It was a difficult game. The conditions were terrible for both teams but especially for us in the first half as there was a hell of a wind.

“I think we’re unlucky to come away with nothing.

“For their first goal the ball has deflected off one of their players, who is trying to claim the goal, I think.

“But these things happen, don’t they? You’ve just got to get on with it.

“I suppose these things tend to happen when you’re on a run like we are because you need these fine margins and that bit of luck.

“I’ve been in this situation a few times myself where one result, or one goal even, can be a catalyst to spring things into life and you then go on an unbeaten run after that.

“I’ve done it two or three times myself and a few others have experienced it, so there’s no reason why we can’t do that.”

Maxwell, a January signing from rivals Preston North End, arrived on a short-term deal until the end of the season after having his contract cancelled at Deepdale.

The shot-stopper had only recently been recalled from a loan spell with Scottish side Hibernian, where he made 17 appearances this season.

The 29-year-old added: “The gaffer let me know later on in the week that I’d be starting, so I had been looking forward to it.

“Despite the result I enjoyed myself and hopefully we can get all three points (against Southend United) next week.

“The opportunity for me to leave Hibs came about when the new manager took over.

“He wanted all of the previous manager’s players out but he was honest and up front with me, so I told him that wasn’t a problem.

“They wanted to save money on wages etcetera, so there were two or three of us that left.

“Then the gaffer said he would be interested in taking me with Jak Alnwick’s injury, so it was something I was desperate to do.

“My other half’s family are all from Blackpool, so I’m proud to represent Blackpool.”
