The Seasiders are set to start the League One season on September 12, though cup games are expected during the previous week.

That means there are just over five weeks until competitive action returns for Blackpool, who resumed training last week.

A Blackpool XI will take on AFC Blackpool at the Mechanics Ground on Saturday, August 22, but that’s the only fixture announced.

Head coach Neil Critchley said: “We haven’t got plans confirmed yet but we’re pencilling games in and getting in contact with other clubs.

“There’s still some uncertainty around testing protocols, and who would actually be available to play games and what procedures you’d have to follow.

“We’re trying to plan as much as we can but I’ve learned in the last few months that you have to be prepared for the unexpected.

“We’re doing all we can but we have to be flexible with our thinking. We have some games lined up.”

It looks increasingly likely that Blackpool’s opening few games of the season will be behind closed doors.

It is hoped stadiums will be able to welcome fans back, in limited numbers at first, in October.

As for playing competitive fixtures in empty grounds, Critchley said: “Is it exactly the same? No, I think we’d all agree from watching games at home that it doesn’t quite feel the same, and that’s because of the supporters.

“Fans are crucial to the game. They make it what it is, so the sooner we can get supporters back in the ground it will be better for everyone.”
