Monday’s arrival of Dan Ballard from Arsenal and Daniel Gretarsson from Norwegian side Aalesunds means the Seasiders now have 11 defenders on their books.

Teddy Howe and Jordan Thorniley have yet to feature for the club in the league this season while Michael Nottingham has been missing since his error-strewn display at Gillingham at the end of last month.

Nottingham, who looks to be heading for the exit door, was again left out of Blackpool’s squad for last night’s EFL Trophy group game against Accrington Stanley.

When asked if defenders are likely to leave before the October 16 deadline, Critchley told The Gazette: “We thought it was an area of the pitch we wanted to reinforce.

“There’s maybe one or two, maybe more - in terms of volume of numbers - that means we might be slightly top heavy.

“The window is still open for another 10 days, so there’s still room to manoeuvre both out and in.”

Ballard, a graduate of Arsenal’s academy and a Northern Ireland international, has joined Blackpool on loan until January.

The 21-year-old is currently away with his national side for their upcoming triple header and won’t be available for Saturday’s league game against Ipswich Town.

Gretarsson, meanwhile, an Icelandic defender that has signed on a permanent deal for an undisclosed fee, could make his debut at the weekend.

“It’s an area of the pitch we thought we’d need some reinforcements,” Critchley said of his two new arrivals.

“Danny Ballard is someone I’m aware of from his Arsenal upbringing and his development in the academy there.

“He’s a full international and he’s a commanding centre-back, so I’m delighted he’s joined.

“As for Daniel Gretarsson, he’s someone we’ve been tracking for a while, so I’m delighted we’ve got that one over the line.

“He’ll join us quickly and I look forward to having them both in the squad for the season.”
