Blackpool and Fleetwood Town to face Oxford United in League One next season as Wycombe are victorious in play-off final

The Chairboys recorded a 2-1 win to seal promotion to the second tier of English football for the first time in the club’s 133-year history.

A deflected Anthony Stewart header gave Gareth Ainsworth’s side an early lead at Wembley, but Oxford fought back in the second half with Mark Sykes' looping cross-shot levelling the score.

Wycombe retook the lead from the penalty spot in the 79th minute after U's goalkeeper Simon Eastwood brought down Fred Onyedinma and Joe Jacobson stepped up to seal their promotion to the Championship.

The Chairboys, tipped for relegation at the start of the season, defied the odds to qualify for the play-offs, having been raised from eighth position in the table when the season came to a premature close to third on points per game.

It means both Blackpool and Fleetwood Town, who were beaten by Wycombe in the play-off semi-finals, will face Oxford in League One once again next season.

Swindon Town, Crewe Alexandra, Plymouth Argyle and Northampton Town are the four teams to be promoted from the fourth tier.

Three teams are still to come down from the Championship, which ends on Wednesday, July 22.

As it stands, Hull City, Luton Town and Barnsley are the three sides that currently occupy the three relegation places.

However, a number of clubs remain in trouble at the bottom of the Championship, including Wigan Athletic who are facing a 12-point penalty.
