Alexander hails Town away record

Town travel to the DW Stadium this afternoon to face a side who lifted the FA Cup just two years ago.

And, having seen his men pull off a win in the cauldron of Bramall Lane and Oakwell last season and pick up points against the likes of Coventry and Bradford Alexander insists he isn’t worried about any opponent, no matter what their pedigree.

“I don’t think there’s many teams who have won more away games than us over the last couple of years,” he said.

“We’ve been right up there over the last couple of seasons with away wins.

“We never go with a defensive mindset, to come away with a point, and Saturday will be no different.

“But we do know Wigan will have real quality players for League One and will be looking to win their home games.

“We’re looking forward to it. It’s a new opponent for a lot of the players, for the club’s supporters. We’re looking for a good performance to go with a good day.”

Town have had a steady start to their second League One campaign, picking up two wins, two defeats and three draws in their opening seven games.

Alexander knows that record could easily have been better but insisted keeping points coming was the most important thing.

He said: “I think being hard to beat can be under-rated.

“We play the same formation home and away, the same people, the same game plan.

“You don’t want anyone planning to play you who thinks you’re a soft touch.

“You have to plan to build from the bottom up and have to be hard to beat before you do anything else.

“We have that but we want to win more games as well.”

Fleetwood raised supporters’ hopes last month with a flurry of goals - scoring four in back-to-back games.

The manager made it clear he never expected his side to sustain such a scoring rate but insists his men are creating enough chances to keep him happy.

“You’re not going to score four goals every game,” said Alexander.

“We’re not going to get carried away and think we can go from a team that wasn’t prolific last season to a team who scores 100 goals.

“That’s not going to happen. But we know we have young players gaining experience by the week and by the season. We play in a different way this season to help those players.

“Once you’ve scored four goals twice in two games you’re going to have opponents doing their homework to stop you doing that again.

“But we know we have goalscorers in the squad.

“I think we could have had more goals in the games we’ve played.”
