Having lost at Exeter City last weekend, the Coasters are back in National League North action when they welcome Spennymoor Town to Mill Farm (7.45pm).

Defeat at Exeter was the club’s first of the season after seven wins and a draw from their opening eight matches in all competitions.

Jordan Hulme had given them the lead against the League Two promotion hopefuls, only for goals from Matt Jay and Alex Hartridge to give Exeter a place in round two.

“On a performance level I thought we were excellent,” Bentley said.

“There were large spells, second half, where we played some great football.

“We came on strong and we looked fit against a very good side and I’m proud of the lads for that.

“I’m disappointed that we’re out of the FA Cup because I’m desperate to go on a run.

“We thought we could come here and win, so there’s loads to be positive about and a couple of negatives we have to iron out.

“They have a good youth set-up, they have sold players and put that money back into the infrastructure – you can see that with the players they’ve got.”

However, it’s now back to the bread and butter of the National North campaign this evening.

The Coasters go into the game sitting second in the table, behind Gloucester City on goal difference after four wins and a draw from their first five matches.

Tonight’s visitors, Spennymoor, are eighth in the division after a pair of victories and draws in their four outings to date.

Fylde were fancied to make an immediate return to the National League’s top flight at the start of the season and Bentley is delighted at the way his new-look squad has performed so far.

He said: “We’re a confident bunch, you don’t fluke the start we’ve got.

“You might get a smash and grab somewhere, there might be a tight game and you come out with a victory from a moment of brilliance, similar to what Nick Haughton has done for us once or twice.

“The rest of the time, we’ve been deserved winners. We’re doing everything right and I’m really pleased with the way it’s going.

“We’re a work in progress but so far so good.”
