The Coasters lost their third round meeting to Boston United on penalties, going down 4-2 in a shootout after a 1-1 draw.

While disappointed to have gone out, Fylde’s manager in the absence of Jim Bentley found reasons to be cheerful in defeat.

He told the club website afterwards: “Penalties are a bit of a lottery.

“Disappointed to be out of the Trophy but I thought the performance was good.

“I spoke about the manner of the defeat at Hereford and I thought we defended well.

“They performed how we wanted them to in terms of how we defended, our approach to the game, our mentality.

“Our attitude was good, so plenty of positives to take out of the performance.”

Fylde had enjoyed a dream start at the weekend, taking the lead inside 30 seconds as Junior Mondal followed up his midweek double in the win at Curzon Ashton with the opening goal.

However, they were pegged back late on through Connor Dimaio’s strike for the home side before Danny Philliskirk and Luke Brennan missed in the shootout.

Chadwick added: “If you look at the game, in the first half, we had them penned in.

“I think the wind spoiled the game to some effect. It’s a new ground, it’s open at one end, and the wind didn’t half get up.

“I think that enabled us to pen them in first half and made it difficult for us to get out second half.

“I thought when we did, we looked a threat on the counter attack and created chances, so it’s disappointing we didn’t capitalise on that.

“Possibly their only shot on target, they score a goal. We’re disappointed with that but there are plenty of positives in terms of the performance as a group and individuals.

“We’ve had loads of positives this week so there’s lots to take forward into the three league games over Christmas.”
