Ben Tollitt added the second as goals either side of half-time gave Fylde a grip on this fourth qualifying round contest at Mill Farm.

But Altrincham, who have replaced Fylde in the National League this season, pulled one back to set up a nervous finale.

Striker Hulme, who joined Fylde at the start of the month, gave an early sign that he intended to haunt his former club as his shot on the turn struck a post after four minutes.

Tollitt fired over the top but there was a setback for Fylde as an early knock ultimately forced captain Nathan Pond to leave the field on 22 minutes.

He was replaced by new recruit Reagan Ogle, signed last week from Accrington Stanley.

The debutant slotted in at left-back, with Luke Conlan moving inside to replace Pond.

Hulme could not quite connect with Luke Burke's cross on 35 minutes but there was no denying the striker on 42, finishing from close range after the visitors had given away possession at the back.

Fylde doubled their lead on 52 minutes, when Tollitt got on the end of a superb ball from Burke and finished coolly.

Another player facing his former club was Altrincham's Matty Kosylo, who shot wide after a run from inside his own half.

Altrincham pulled one back on 59 minutes, when Thomas Peers was first to Connor Hampson's low ball to the near post and finished well.

Jake Moult will feel he should have done better with a shot straight at Fylde keeper Chris Neal as the visitors pressed for an equaliser.

Two chances fell to former Fleetwood Town midfielder Dan Mooney, who fired wide on 79 minutes and then headed over from six yards two minutes later.

Josh Hancock's free-kick was fired straight at Neal on 83 minutes and that would be the last time the Coasters keeper was troubled, despite five minutes of added time.

This was Fylde's third FA Cup win of the month, following their successes against Hyde United and Farsley Celtic, and gives Jim Bentley's side the chance to draw an EFL League One or Two club this evening.
