Fleetwood bowls festival rolls into action

Fleetwood is the mecca this week for bowlers from all over the North, Midlands and beyond.

A total of 400 of them are in the town for the 35th annual Fleetwood Bowls Festival.

Sponsored by Willowgrove Leisure Park, a total of £7,000 in prize money is up for grabs,

There was plenty of excitement and terrific bowls played in both the men’s and ladies’ singles competitions with many top bowlers narrowly losing out on the tricky greens.

The last 32 in both of the singles events takes place on Thursday with the grand finals of all the Festival competitions including the singles, juniors and mixed pairs being played on Friday in the Marine Gardens.

Four local men have battled their way to the last 32 stage.

They are: Darren Edmondson (Singleton), Trevor Burrows (Carleton) and the Blackpool duo of Neil Bennett and John Foulds.

However there will be some tough opposition from former Festival Champions Kevin Boon (Congleton) and Graeme Wilson (Audenshaw) as well as other favourites

Callum Wraight (Castlefields) and Chris MacDonald (Congleton)a former Bass Masters winner.

In the ladies’ singles competition there are no less than five former winners in the last 32 and they are competing to take the first prize and book a place in the Ladies Champion of Champions at The Waterloo green in Blackpool in September.
