Blackpool snooker ace James Cahill is hopeful the Welsh Open snooker tournament will prove to be a turning point for him after coming through his first-round clash in Cardiff.

He beat world number 40 Xiao Guodong 4-1 at the Motorpoint Arena and set up a second-round match today with Mark Davis.

Cahill has had a poor season to date with this being his first win since October.

He said: “I’m the sort of person who wants everything now but it’s a hard game and it’s a learning curve. It’s all about the experience and hopefully now I can start getting a few more results.

“Beating Xiao is a good win after the form I’ve shown this year – it’s only the first round though, so hopefully I can progress from here.

“This season has been terrible especially with how I know I can play, compared to how I’ve actually been playing. I’m getting a few good results here and there but it’s not consistent enough.”

Davis was the man who ended Cahill’s run at the 2014 UK Championship.

Cahill said: Mark another good player but I’ve got a lot to improve on from my first round - I need revenge on Mark for when he beat me at the UK Championship in 2014!”

“A lot of people think you have to get off to a great start in these best-of-sevens – and obviously I’d rather get off to a good start than a bad one – but even if you’re 2-0 or 3-0 down, you can have a few breaks and easily win 4-3.”
