Hollywood to Belfast for busy Scott

LYTHAM light-welterweight boxer Scott Cardle is in action on Saturday, when he bids to extend his 100 per cent record at a televised promotion in Belfast

Cardle, who will be having his fifth professional contest, takes on Frenchman Renald Garrido and has been boosted by a recent trip to to the United States, where he trained under the watchful eye of world-renowned fight coach Freddie Roach at the famous Wild Card Gym in Hollywood.

The six-rounder against Garrido will herald the start of a busy schedule for Cardle, who will box three times in the space of six weeks.

After Belfast, he will box in front of his home fans for the first time as a pro on October 5 at the Winter Gardens in Blackpool, prior to a fight at the Motorpoint Arena in Sheffield on October 20.

Cardle is not afraid of the workload and says he will thrive on it.

He said: “When I heard I had all these fights, it was music to my ears because I want to be busy, and that’s how I like it.

“I intend to have had nine fights by December and hope to be boxing for a Central Area or English title early in 2013.”

First up, Cardle will box at the Odyssey Arena in Belfast on the undercard of the Sky Sports-televised ‘Judgement Day’ show, in which Carl Frampton will defend his Commonwealth and IBF International super bantamweight titles against Canadian Steve Molitor.

Saturday’s opponent Garrido will be boxing for the first time outside his native France. Of his eight fights, he has won six and lost two.

Cardle says it is something of a step into the unknown for him, though he is confident of adding another winning notch to his perfect professional record.

Garrido is a former French amateur international, of whom Cardle says: “I don’t know a lot about him apart from his record and the only footage I have seen of him is when he was an amateur.

“He likes to stand up and throw a lot of hooks, and I will be using a lot of head movement to deal with that.”

Cardle gained invaluable experience from his three-week trip to the States, alongside fellow boxers like Scott Quigg, Anthony Crolla, Callum Johnson and the Smith brothers, Paul, Liam and Calum.

The Lytham fighter even had a session with Roach on the pads, and he and the rest have been invited back to another similar camp in December.
