Blackpool schoolchildren get sporty in a great cause

Children across Blackpool did their bit for Sport Relief 2018 in a week-long series of sepcatcular events.

These saw students and staff join forces to complete challenges and to raise money for some worthy causes.

Park Community Academy got the week under way with a 300-mile challenge that saw every student from the school completing laps of Stanley Park and the school’s Multi-Use Games Area to help to smash the target.

Morning showers kept everyone nice and cool until the wind arrived, though the singalong soundtrack kept spirits high and provided well-needed boosts when legs were starting to tire.

The afternoon saw the 300-mile target passed as the staff helped the students achieve their target, with an extra seven miles completed just for fun.

South Shore Academy kept the momentum going after the weekend break.

They staged daily challenges which included basketball shoot-outs, circuits, speed bounce and team challenges before heading outside for a Fun Run on the Friday afternoon.

Other events across the week saw Unity, St John’s and Waterloo – to name a few – getting involved with step challenges, cake sales, face painting, penalty shoot-outs and dance-a-thons in a true showing of team camaraderie across the town.

Dave Rohman, Blackpool School Games Organiser, said: “It was amazing to see just how many schools supported Sport Relief and the imaginative ways that the staff and students raised awareness and funds.

“The social media posts each day created some healthy competition among the schools as they were all keen to celebrate their achievements.

“They also wanted to inspire other schools across the town to get involved.

“In a time when time and money are sparse, I am extremely proud of all of the schools in Blackpool.

“And I am sure that Sport Relief recognises all the efforts made by everyone involved.”
