Ap-peal of bell ringers noticed

In 2014, the bellringers of St Annes Parish Church, supported by local members of the Lancashire Association of Change Ringers, rang a quarter peal – approximately 45 minutes of continuous ringing with more than 1,200 changes of bell sequence requiring a team of at least six expert bellringers – in memory of Isaac Street, the first man from St Annes to die in the First World War, on the exact centenary 
of his death on August 26, 
1914.

Since then, a further 17 quarter peals have been rung in memory of a further 52 men from St Annes, who died in the service of their country in the First World War, the most recent being last month when the eight men who died in September 1916 were commemorated.

Parish Church tower captain Stuart Newton said: “It was a huge surprise to hear that we had reached the final, but a great tribute to the support we have received from the many local bellringers from Lytham, St Annes and Fylde, who have rallied round to help us with this very worthwhile initiative to remember these men from our town.”

The winners will be chosen by a panel headed by historian Sir Roy Strong at a ceremony in London on November 2.
