Primary school children in Wyre and Fylde, who took SATs at the end of Year Six this year, helped Lancashire County Council to both match and better national average scores, making them the authority’s best ever results.

County councillor Nikki Hennessy, lead member for schools, said: “I am absolutely delighted – and very proud of our primary school children.

“Provisional results show that 80 per cent of pupils in Lancashire have gained a Level Four or above in reading, writing and mathematics combined, which is an improvement of around three per cent on last year.

“The progress that pupils make at school also improved, with more than 90 per cent of pupils making at least the expected progress between the ages of seven and 11.

“Lancashire’s performance remains above the national averages for all the key measures and I think the results are a tribute to our primary school staff, parents, and of course the children themselves.”
