Worry over home plans traffic rise

Ashley Sorensen, chairman of the Wyre Council Residents Concerns and Action Group, said the increased number of houses in the area would cause traffic problems .

He said: “Thornton has probably doubled in size since I was younger, and this is mostly down to housing.

“Everyone has to travel everywhere because there is very little near us. Traffic in the area is terrible.”

He added: “We are seeing more and more of our countryside being handed over to these developers with nothing being offered to residents in return.”

Wyre Council defended its decision to grant planning permission to the multiple projects, citing government policy to ‘boost significantly the supply of housing’.

Property developers Wainhomes are currently working to build new houses to the rear of Moorland Avenue in the town, meanwhile, Redrow is building up to 100 new homes on land near Carr Head Lane.

Plans to build 50 retirement apartments on Station Roadare also underway by property developers by McCarthy and Stone.

And plans to build 15 apartments on the former Fleetwood Pier site were approved last month, despite 1,100 objections to the controversial scheme.

A Wyre Council spokesman said: “(The government) requires that development that is sustainable is approved without delay unless the adverse impacts of doing so significantly and demonstrably outweigh the benefits.” They added that they would continue to work with the local highway authority to ensure that the appropriate infrastructure is in place to meet the needs of the borough.
