Heartbreaking moment murdered baby Preston Davey was cruelly deprived of sleep on his first birthday by killer

A heartbreaking video capturing the level of cruelty a 13-month-old baby suffered at the hands of his killer has been released by police.

Today the ex-South Shore Academy teacher Jamie Varley, the man he began to know as ‘daddy’ was found guilty of murder as well as two counts of assault by penetration, five counts of cruelty to a child, grievous bodily harm, sexual assault of a child, 13 counts of taking indecent photos or videos of a child, one of distributing an indecent photo of a child, to his co-accused, and one of making an indecent photo.

Textiles teacher Varley, of Chandlers Way, Grimsargh and formerly of Staining Road, Staining and his partner financial salesman John McGowan-Fazakerley were in the proccess of adopting the youngster through Adoption Now and Oldham Council.

McGowan-Fazakerley, 32, also of Chandlers Way, Grimsargh and formerly of Staining Road, Staining was found guilty of allowing the death of a child, three counts of child cruelty and one count of the sexual assault of a child.

Little Preston, who was taken into care at just five days old, had only been living with the pair in Staining for less than four months when he was taken to Blackpool Victoria Hospital in cardiac arrest after being the victim of a sexual assault.

Despite the best efforts of medics who spent more than an hour trying to save the baby who was pronounced dead.

The court heard Varley told medical staff he had left the child in the bath for two or three minutes and returned to find him submerged.

But prosecutors allege this was a cover story to explain his sudden death after a sexual assault.

A post-mortem examination found 40 external and internal trauma injuries to the child’s body, consistent with “forcible penetration” and sexual abuse, and ruled out drowning as a cause of death.

Preston’s cause of death was given as acute airway obstruction by an object or object placed in his mouth.

In a new video shown to the jury, a cruel Varley, identified by his distinctive pyjamas he wore to the hospital on the day Preston died, can be seen sat on the floor late at night with Moana music playing loudly.

The video was filmed on Preston’s first birthday.

As an exhausted Preston was about to fall asleep sat up, Varley screamed boo in his face.

The video which shows, little Preston clearly bewildered by the act, was used in evidence to show the level of mental abuse the child faced at the hands of his cruel carers.

Around 40 minutes after the videos of Preston being 'kept awake' were recorded, another video was recorded showing the baby lying on the floor. The prosecution say he 'appeared unwell'.

Varley then texted his partner saying Preston was 'ill again' and 'might have had another seizure' but said he was not going to take him to hospital, the court heard.

Prosecutors say sleep deprivation was just one type of torture suffered by the tragic youngster.

The video of the incident was filmed by evil Varley along with other acts of cruelty which prosecutors said were trophies of the abuse.

The pair will be sentenced on Thursday.
