As thousands of people jostled for prime viewing spots on the Green with their camping chair for comfort, picnic hampers were unloaded, drinks poured and pop-up tables adorned with all types of nibbles.

Although not strictly the ‘last night’ (Rita Ora and friends sang on the Sunday) the evening was dedicated to all things classical, with fabulous performances from male four piece The Nocturnes, Fylde violinist Gary Lovini, Britain’s Got Talent stars Jonathan and Charlotte and ‘The Voice’ himself, world renowned star Russell Watson, superbly complemented by the National Symphony Orchestra.

As more finger sandwiches, quiche and cake – not to mention the odd drop of wine – was consumed, the atmosphere in turn lifted, with the volume rising among the crowd as a series of classical hits reverberated around Lytham Green.

A rousing finale of Land of Hope and Glory brought the crowd to its feet, before a sensational firework display concluded the night.
