VIDEO: Flash floods in college, houses and major roads in Blackpool

Residents took to social media after the sudden heavy rain made roads such as Warley Road, Bromley Road and Devonshire Road ‘impassable’ for a period of time.

It has also been reported that Devonshire Road is closed off between Claremont Road and Mansfield Road due to the flooding, but should be “clear within the hour”.

The council are also clearing seweage in this area.

Firefighters were called to incidents across the area after the water entered and damaged a number of properties - including the Unity Academy School and College.

Crews from Bispham assisted college staff in the salvage of property endangered by water entering the premises on Warbrick Hill Road.

The service also attended an incident where two neighbouring properties became flooded on Dudley Avenue in Blackpool.

Firefighters from Blackpool unblocked surface drains to allow the water to drain away.

A service spokesman said that there were no casualties in any of these incidents.

A spokesman for Blackpool Council said the flooding was down to “the high volume of water which came down in such a short amount of time”.

He said: “It was a torrential heavy downpour and it took a while for the drains to catch up with the amount of water that came down so suddenly.

“But the water is now gone from that area.

“The drains are now dealing with it.”

Residents have also taken to Facebook to comment on the floods.

Louise Brooks wrote: “Couldn’t even see road markings. The water covered roads and pavements covering the kerbs.”

Tim Christian said: “Roundabout at Gynn Square was practically underwater before.”

Andrew Mcknight commented: “Normally 10 - 15 minutes to get home. It took well over an hour, driving round and round to get out of traffic... nightmare.”
