Andrew Noble discovered window panes had been smashed on the shelters in St Annes, actions which he has described as “a blight on the resort”.

He is now appealing to Gazette readers to help catch those responsible for the vandalism to the structures, one of which dates back to Victorian times.

Mr Noble, who is an unpaid but uniformed volunteer with the force, said: “The shelters are very close to my heart.

“They’re really part of our heritage with St Annes being such a classic resort.

He added: “It is so upsetting because I walk the Promenade every day.

“I adore the Prom and when we see such vandalism it’s really disheartening because visitors all see it and will think ‘is this place really safe?’

“It’s quite a blight on the resort that’s so unnecessary and I just think it’s mindless vandalism.”

The broken panes were first discovered on Tuesday morning.

Fylde Council, which is responsible for the upkeep of the shelters, estimates it will cost around £200 to repair the damage.

A spokesman for the authority said: “We are astounded that people want to damage these shelters.

“They are very attractive and historic which make the Promenade gardens the attractive place that they are.

“We would ask anybody who has any information about this damage to let us or the police know.”

Anyone with information should call Lancashire Police on 101.
