Tumour fight no barrier for plucky mum

Georgina Martin, 30, was diagnosed with a debilitating tumour on her spine in July that meant she had to rely on a mobility scooter and zimmerframe to move around .

But the full-time mother-of-two refused to let her disability get in the way of realising her goal of opening a brand new indoor market in Cleveleys.

Mrs Martin, of Lancaster Avenue, Thornton, said: “When I found out that I had the cancer I wasn’t upset about it.

“You just have to get on with life.”

“The way I see it is there’s nothing I can do about it - it is what it is.”

Mrs Martin, who is now awaiting further tests on the tumour, decided to open the new Victoria Road market along with her friend Laura Clare, 26, to boost the number of visitors coming into the town centre.

She said: “We wanted to help local businesses.”

The Victoria Mall, which is set to open in Victoria Road in November, will be the first in the town since the closure of the HBS Shopping Village in 2013.

It will showcase around 10 individually-owned stalls selling games, crafts, clothes, toys, sweets and accessories.

She said: “A lot of local people complain that there are too many charity shops in the town and there’s not much to choose from.

“We wanted to give people more of a choice.”

Mrs Martin’s business partner Laura Clare, who works as a photographer, said: “Georgina is an absolute inspiration.

“It’s difficult for her because she can’t do everything that we can do but she is so motivated. She would never give up.”

Miss Clare approached Mrs Martin six months ago about setting up the new market.

Since then they have worked tirelessly to make their dream a reality.

Miss Clare said: “I hope the market becomes a community base and that we can bring people together.”
