Trio smash funds target

Jason Gorner, 47, and his friends Caroline Wareing, 36, and Karl Crompton, 44, cycled for more than 90 hours frim Lands’ End in the south of England to John o’Groats in the north of Scotland in aid of cancer research.

Garage owner Jason, who lives on Ballam Road, Westby, said: “We’re all OK and we’re a bit sun-burned and sore from the ride.”

The trio had initially hoped to raise £5,000 for cancer research during the 10-day journey, but this quickly ballooned into an incredible £21,000.

Jason said: “We have had a lot of people get behind us and it’s just spiralled from there.

“The generosity of people is amazing.

“The majority of it has come from friends and family and it’s a huge amount of money to make. We might even have made £22,000 or £23,000.

“I’m overwhelmed really. It’s very humbling.

“You can’t believe that people are putting their hands in their pockets for our cause.

“We all have our own personal reasons for raising money for cancer research. I have close friends and family that I have unfortunately lost to cancer. Caroline lost her mother-in-law to cancer last year.”

He added that he believed Caroline, who lives in Thistleton, had broken the world record for the fastest completion of the famous journey using a hand bike - a modified bicycle made for people who do not have use of their legs.

He said: “She started using a wheelchair seven or eight years ago after falling off a horse.

“We have been training every weekend and on a night for the past seven months.

“Now I might just slow down for a little bit and have a bit of a breather.”
