Coun Sue Fazackerley, who now serves as Conservative deputy leader of the council, first met Ms Procopides while a schoolgirl.

She said: “She was on the staff at my school and then I came across her again when she came canvassing when I was living in Orchard Road.

“It was a great surprise to see her, and some years later I stood myself for the same ward.

“Although she was not a member of my political party we always had a very good working relationship.”
