Commuters had to find alternative routes to work after the A49 Wigan Road was blocked in both directions at Euxton near Chorley.

The tree collapsed across the carriageway at around 6.40am between Balshaw Lane and Dawber’s Lane, near to the Euxton Hall Hospital, bringing down a lamp-post. No-one was injured.

A police spokesman said: “We are now waiting for council workmen to cut the tree up and move it. They were on site quite quickly and we don’t expect the road to be blocked for a long period of time.

The incident is the second blockage in Wigan Road in the past 48 hours, with a section of the highway closed due to flooding on Monday.

There were no other reports of major damage as Storm Frank hit the county overnight. But emergency services were on standby at a number of points around Lancashire - particularly in the flood-hit village of Croston - with the bad weather set to continue through the day.
