One of the casualties was reportedly cut free from their vehicle, according to eyewitness reports, but their injuries are not thought to be serious.

A spokeswoman for North West Ambulance Service said: "Two patients were taken to hospital, one with arm and neck injuries and one with a chest injury.

"Neither thought to be serious.

"I have no gender or age details I’m afraid."

The road was closed for nearly two hours while emergency services assessed the damage and made the scene safe, reopening at around 1.30pm.

"Crews made the scene safe using some power tools and the casualty was tended to by paramedics at the scene.

"We were in attendance around one hour."

Heavy traffic was building in the area as a result of the road closure, with bus services diverting their routes to avoid the congestion, but this has since cleared.
