Town square closed after crash

St Annes Square was closed earlier following a collision between a motorbike and car.

The emergency services were called to the scene shortly after 2pm, a police spokeswoman said.

Two crews from St Annes Fire Station gave first aid to the male motorcyclist, who suffered a suspected broken wrist and dislocated shoulder.

An ambulance was first called at 2.02pm, but paramedics did not attend until an hour later, a spokeswoman for the North West Ambulance Service confirmed.

One eyewitness said: “Nobody could believe the amount of time it took. I called 999 three times.

“I’m going to put in a complaint.”

The woman said she had just left supermarket Aldi when she heard ‘an almighty bang’.

She turned to see the biker, thought to be in his late teens, lying on the floor.

He had a crash helmet on, but was wearing casual clothes, she said.

“He was conscious but not moving,” she added. “There was around eight people with him in the middle of the road, which could have caused another accident.

“It was bedlam. Only the two fire engines came, but it took over an hour for the ambulance which is not acceptable.

“Some people actually clapped when the ambulance came, it was that bad.”
