Man dies after Land Rover crashes into tree and catches fire near Lancashire picnic site

A man in his 50s has died after his Land Rover crashed into a tree on a winding road near a popular Lancashire picnic site.

The man crashed in Brock Mill Lane, in the rural Wyre village of Claughton, as he was travelling towards nearby Brock Bottoms Picnic Site at around 3.30pm yesterday (March 1).

Emergency services rushed to the scene where they found the red Land Rover had come off the winding road and hit a tree before catching fire.

Fire crews from Longridge and Fulwood were mobilised, but the car was already well alight when they arrived at the scene.

The driver, aged in his 50s, was travelling alone and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police are now appealing for anyone with information, dashcam or CCTV footage from the area to come forward to help their investigation into the cause of the crash.

Sgt Finn Quainton, of Lancashire Police’s Tactical Operations, said: “This collision has led to a man sadly losing his life and first and foremost my thoughts are with his family at this extremely difficult time.

"We are working to establish a full picture of what led to this fatal collision and I would ask anybody with any information or footage which could assist with our enquiries to please get in touch with police as soon as possible."

A fire service spokesman added: "At 3.30pm, two fire engines from Fulwood and Longridge attended a road traffic collision in Brock Mill Lane, Preston.

"The vehicle was alight and firefighters used one breathing apparatus, two hose reels and foam to extinguish the fire.

"Sadly one person died at this collision. Crews were at the scene for several hours working alongside Lancashire Police who are appealing for information."
