Jams today... more jams tomorrow

That is the warning from one Wyre councillor after a week of nightmare conditions on the borough’s roads.

Temporary traffic lights on Breck Road caused heavy rush hour delays last week with drivers reporting tailbacks stretching well beyond the town itself.

One motorist, who did not wish to be named, contacted The Gazette angry that it had taken 40 minutes to drive the mile-long stretch between Stanah and the River Wyre roundabout.

And with ongoing roadworks delaying motorists through Poulton, Coun Kerry Jones, who represents Stanah, has made it clear something needs to be done.

She said: “It’s an ongoing issue but the roadworks have definitely made it a lot worse.”

This week Station Road is closed at the junction with Breck Road for works to take place in connection with a new housing development.

Blackpool Old Road has also been shut at the junction with Queensway, piling pressure on alternative routes.

Coun Jones says the works prove Poulton’s roads are at bursting point.

“Traffic lights at the junction between Breck Road and Moorland Road might help alleviate it a little,” said Coun Jones.

“But the basic problem is too much traffic. Poulton is too small for the development going on.

“I’m on the planning committee and I’ve resisted two major developments, on Moorland Road and Garstang Road which are going ahead.

“They are only going to make things worse.”
