Crews from Lytham and Fleetwood were scrambled at around 8.40pm after the ‘despondent’ woman was seen crying and shouting close to North Pier.

However, they were stood down on arrival after officers from Blackpool Police arrived and spoke to the woman, who said she actually had no real intention to harm herself, The Gazette understands.

A spokeswoman for Lancashire Police said an ambulance which was on its way was also cancelled, while volunteers from the RNLI, based at Blackpool Lifeboat Station on the Prom and reliant on charitable funding, were also turned back and being launched.

The woman, unharmed, is believed to have left the area and gone home with her partner in tow.
