A deep sink hole has appeared on the busy South Shore route, causing part of it to be closed.

But Blackpool Council defended its previous decision to temporarily repair the road surface, saying it had intended to prevent further traffic disruption.

Martin Begg, of the Talking Watch Shop on Highfield Road, said; “We reported the problem twice to the council, in October and November.

“All they did was to patch it up. But if they had done a proper job, perhaps we wouldn’t have this big hole now and the road shut.

“It is hard enough as it is for businesses at the moment without the road being closed.”

Highfield Road has been closed between Abbey Road and Garton Avenue while repairs are carried out.

A council spokesman said a temporary repair had been made so the road did not have to shut while other roads in the area were already closed due to United Utilities work.

United Utilities is now set to repair the hole.
