Town hall purchases Stanley site

Blackpool Council is buying up a building on the junction of Caunce Street and Church Street.

The property adjoins Stanley Buildings which the authority already owns.

Coun Fred Jackson, cabinet member for municipal assets approved the move, which the council says will enable it “to control a possible development in the future although no development is planned at this time.”

The cost of the acquisition has not been disclosed for commercial reasons.

A report adds: “The council has for some time sought to acquire the building as it allows the council to better influence the future use and direction of development on Caunce Street and Church Street.

“The opportunity has arisen to purchase the site at this point and this situation may not be repeated in future.

“There are no immediate plans to develop the Stanley Buildings site and in the short to medium term it is intended to grant short-term leases of both the ground and first floors.”
