Thousands back £2m lake bid

More than 9,000 people have signed up to ambitious plans to revamp a historic beauty spot as part of a £2m heritage lottery grant bid.

Residents in Fylde have given their backing to the multi-million pound revamp of Fairhaven Lake – leaving the project just 1,000 short of the 10,000 target needed to persuade the Heritage Lottery Fund to support the restoration.

A spokesman for Fylde Council said: “We have been inviting letters, signatures and petitions and, at the last count, had more than 9,000 backing the project.

“We still want more people to come on board.

“There is no set figure as such but we feel they would look positively if we had more than 10,000 signatures.”

The project includes improving facilities for sailing and rowing, improvements to the lake edge, a new Japanese water garden and improved play areas.

If successful with initial costings, the go-ahead for the project could be given in June 2016, with work expected to start in spring 2017.

Fylde Council leader Coun Sue Fazackerley added: “I urge as many people as possible to back the campaign and write to the town hall in support of these plans and we will send them to the Heritage Lottery Fund.”
