This is why Blackpool RNLI and North West Ambulance Service were on the promenade yesterday

Blackpool RNLI and North West Ambulance Service took part in a highly visible training exercise yesterday on the promenade.

The whole idea was promote safety in the water and for crews to practice working together.

Sector manager for NWAS Jenny Peel “With scenarios where people have suffered incidents in the water, we have to work together to promote that quick and safe rescue.

“The exercise included lots of crew members so that they know what to do, where to meet the lifeboat and what to expect when they arrive and are brought a patient out of the We have looked at what kinds of scenarios they might face, including drowning and where someone needs immediate attention.

“We always see a spike in the number of water related incuidents in warm weather. People get carried away, perhaps go a little bit deeper than is safe to do so, but we are lucky here to have a beach patrol.

Steve Fitzgerald, Blackpool RNLI press officer, said: “We are very strong partners with the ambulance service.

“Casualty care in the boat is our job when we pull someone out of the sea - it could be hypothermia or someone who is unresponsive. So we do casualty care up until we arrive back at the lifeboat station or on the beach and hand them to the care of the ambulance service.

“This training allows them to do their side of it and the criticality of water borne injuries can be very different from anything they experience inland in their day to day job.
