Surfers' call for Big Beach Clean volunteers

Marine conservation charity ‘Surfers Against Sewage’ has called upon 20,000 volunteers to join in 550 community beach cleans from April 1 until April 15.

The Big Spring Beach Clean, which comes to Starr Gate on April 15 at 10am, will ask volunteers to record and share the number of ‘avoidable plastics’ they find.

Prime ‘avoidable plastic’ offenders include plastic bottles, coffee cups and lids, plastic cutlery, straws, food packaging, plastic bags, bathroom plastics, balloons, condiment sachets and wrappers, and polystyrene packaging.

The call comes as Government reports revealed that ocean plastic is set to treble by 2025.

Dom Ferris, SAS head of community and engagement said: “The scene is set and all that remains is for you to donate your time to the cause. The great news is that SAS beach cleans are also really fun, community spirited events and with 17 beach cleans taking place... there’s sure to be plenty to choose from near you.”
