The coastguard team was called at 10pm yesterday to reports of the male kayaker in trouble on King's Scar, a small island 1.6 miles off the coast north of Fleetwood.

They said: "As we arrived on scene, we could see the casualty struggling to paddle against the tide approximately 1km from shore."

RNLI Fleetwood launched its ILB and AWB lifeboats.

They rescued the man and returned him to shore near the Lower Lighthouse, where he was checked by the coastguard.

A spokesman said: "When we were happy no medical assistance was needed, he trudged off home with his kayak to warm up and rest.

"As we had completed the paperwork and equipment checks back at the station, we had another call regarding a member of the public threatening to enter the water in the St Chads area of Blackpool. We quickly deployed our officers again and as we arrived on scene, Blackpool police had assisted the casualty to safety."
