St Annes masterplan phase two - here’s everything we know so far

Work begins next week on two major public realm schemes that will strengthen connections between St Annes Square, the seafront and Ashton Gardens.

The transformation of St Annes town centre continues next week as two major improvement projects get underway, further enhancing links between the town centre, the seafront and Ashton Gardens.

Phase 2 of the St Annes Masterplan begins on Monday 23 February with the £1.6 million Pier Link project.

This scheme will reshape the route between the newly improved St Annes Square and the promenade, introducing one-way traffic travelling from Clifton Drive South towards the pier.

The changes will create wider pavements, new planting and additional seating, delivering a safer and more welcoming environment for pedestrians.

A dedicated contraflow cycle lane will allow cyclists to travel safely into the town centre, while raised crossing tables will calm traffic and maintain level access for wheelchair users and those with pushchairs.

Carefully selected coastal planting, including geraniums and ornamental grasses, will provide year-round colour, complemented by raised planters with built-in drainage.

New stone benches with back and arm rests will offer comfortable places to pause.

On Tuesday 24 February, work will begin on the £1.5 million Garden Street project, creating a greener, pedestrian-friendly link to Ashton Gardens.

The design protects mature trees while introducing seasonal planting suited to both sun and shade.

A flowing pedestrian route will improve access to bus stops and new seating - including cube seats designed to accommodate wheelchairs between them - will encourage people to rest and socialise. Enhanced lighting will improve safety and visibility after dark.

Both projects are funded by Fylde Council and the UK Shared Prosperity Fund with additional support from Lancashire County Council for Pier Link and are being delivered by George Cox & Sons Ltd.

Councillor Karen Buckley, Leader of Fylde Council, said: “These projects build brilliantly on the success of St Annes Square, creating accessible, attractive connections that will help our businesses thrive while making it easier for residents and visitors to enjoy everything our beautiful town centre and stunning seafront have to offer.”
