Lt Chris Southworth left The Willows Catholic Primary School, Kirkham, 25 years ago, but was given permission to visit the school while carrying out Navy training nearby.

He surprised current pupils and staff at the school, where his mum Shirley Wilson is assistant headteacher, yesterday.

Lt Southworth said: “I have very fond memories of my time at school. To fly over Kirkham and then spot all the pupils waving was a real thrill. We often land the Lynx (helicopter) on the back of a small ship so landing on the school field was not too difficult.

“The children gave us a really warm welcome and it was great to see my mum again. She gave me a tour of the school which was really interesting. Some parts have changed but it still has the same family feel.”

Mrs Wilson said: “It was a very proud day for me and the children were buzzing for the rest of the day.”
