It’s played host to some of the biggest names in the music world.

But this week, Blackpool’s historic Empress Ballroom was taken over by a slightly different event.

A huge tea dance lit up the stunning venue as part of an international celebration for older people.

Blackpool Council joined the event to recognise the achievements and contributions that older people make to society.

The free Older Person’s Tea Dance, held for three hours on Wednesday, saw the dancefloor packed with people taking part. The event began with free refreshments and dancing, which included displays and lessons by the semi-professional Crown Ballroom Dancers.

A compère led guests through the days entertainment and activities, including a free raffle and performance from a local Blackpool choir.

It also included presentations on keeping active, with an ‘active corner’ provided by Blackpool Council’s Leisure Services.

Adult Learning was also on hand to showcase the wide variety of courses available.

Coun Christine Wright, champion for older people and cabinet member for culture and heritage at Blackpool Council, said: “Getting involved in events such as this are a great excuse to socialise.

“It’s essential as we get older to take part in activities which keep us happy and healthy.”

A large number of national and local organisations attended the event to provide expert advice and information about their services which are helping to improve the lives of older people, helping them to stay healthy, and reducing loneliness and isolation.

Organisations included Age UK, Blackpool Carers Centre, Empowerment, Care and Repair, Fire Service, Stop Smoking Service, Silverline, Blackpool’s Fairness Commission, Dementia Friends, Horizon and ‘Ready to Switch’ – a scheme to help save money on energy bills.

There was memory testing, health checks and discount entry to Blackpool’s Illuminasia attraction.
