Scouting Snapshots

Nicole Hadgraft, 16, Josh Austin, 16, Reuben Bond, 14, and Adam Robinson, 15, will take part in the 24th World Jamboree, which will be held at Summit Bechtel Family National Scout Reserve, Mount Hope, West Virginia.

It comes following an intense but fun selection weekend at Layton Primary School, where 30 young Scouts and Explorers came together and worked in teams doing various tasks under the watching eye of monitors.

These four youngsters are now embarking on the start of a fantastic journey, and will follow in the footsteps of many young people who have gone on to become outstanding leaders in West Lancashire.

The group will have regular meetings with their fellow peers who have been chosen from across from their respective district with West Lancashire Scout Council.

They will all be flying the flag for Scouting and the UK.

However to get to their destination, purchase their equipment, and medical requirements, the Blackpool contingent have to raise in excess of £4,000.

One third is paid by the District, one third by the county and the final third by the individual, which normally consists of lots of collective fund raising through coffee mornings, race night, tombola stalls, car washing, football cards, and cabaret evenings.

Trophy to remember leader Jack

On a bitterly cold day last Sunday, Cub Scouts came together for a great day of outdoor activities.

The activities were held at Blackpool District Scout Council Training and Camp Site, called Mowbreck, which is based in Wesham.

The talented youngsters, who were all aged between eight and 10-and-a-half, took part in the day to remember Jack Lamb, one of Blackpool District’s longest serving leaders.

The Jack Lamb trophy was given in memory of one of our dedicated leaders, who passed away a number of years ago.

One of his many outstanding contributions was his love of work with the youngsters around him, and to pass on his incredible out door skills

Ted Copper, assistant district commissioner for Cub Scouts, said: “It was a Scouting skills competition. The three parts of the day were cooking, pioneering and a hike with map reading and compass work.

“Thirteen packs attended with 78 Cub Scouts taking part.

“First place went to 51st Blackpool, second place to 24th Blackpool and third place to the 23rd and 3rd Blackpool.

“It was a great day, everyone enjoyed it.

“It was fantastic to see the high quality of Scouting skills our Cub Scouts have.”
