Scouting Snapshots

The Scout Car Races took place in Middleston, Manchester,

The event is held every year in one of four locations throughout the country, including Blackpool.

This year’s event was organised by North Manchester Scout District.

The race this year had 35 cars entered and they could be used in multiple classes and races, with different drivers from each group.

The race was in two parts with cars and drivers taking part in Novice Classes, right through to Championship Classes were the cars getting up to speeds of 30 mph.

The age ranges from Cub Scouts of eight through to adults, with all the cars inspected for racing purposes by the National Peddle Car Association, and is one of organised races that take place up and down the country.

Blackpool District Scouts were represented by five groups, namely the 5th Blackpool, 7th Blackpool, 44th Blackpool, and the 1st Norbreck Scout Group respectively.

All the cars are given a number and name.

Celebrating a year of Scouting success for resort district

Blackpool Scouts held their AGM in the Matthews Lounge at Blackpool Football Club.

More than 100 Voluntary Leaders and Supporters, and Officers came together for an overview of the previous year’s work, activity and achievements from some 24 groups in the District.

The evening started with entertainment by members of the Blackpool Gang Show, with a brief selection of songs, and this was a taste of what to expect from the forthcoming show to be held in October at the Grand Theatre.

The formal part of the meeting then began, with a Thought for the Day led by Jordan Shuck, Blackpool District Scouts Youth Commissioner, who reflected on the contribution of the Suffragettes Movement, and the impact women have had in society, and particularly in Scouting.

Chairman Kathryn O’Conner welcomed everyone to the meeting, and invited the President of the District Coun Lily Henderson and Coun Gillian Critchley to say a few words.

An overall view of the year’s activity was presented by Victoira Da Silva, District Commissioner for Scouting in Blackpool, and thanked all the leaders for their unstinting hard work.

We were also delighted to hear a few words from Gordon Marsden MP, who expressed his admiration and confidence in the District as a leading force in the community.

Diane Parkinson, District Scout Leader, and Steve Brownlee, Leader with the 44th Blackpool Scout Group, were presented by the District Commissioner with the Award of Merit for outstanding contributions to Scouting.

Gordon Clark, District Cub Scout Leader, was presented by the District Commissioner with the Silver Wolf – the highest award in Adult Scouting.

The guest speakers for the evening were a group of Explorer Scouts.
