Road closed after cafe wall collapses

Road closures are expected to continue for several days after a significant part of a popular Blackpool cafe collapsed.

The outside wall of the Lowery Cafe on Coronation Street crumbled at around 1.45am, leaving bricks and debris covering the pavement.

A portion of the street outside the shop remains cordoned off to pedestrians and traffic, with police estimating the closures will last for ‘‘the next few days’.

A spokesman for the Lowery Cafe posted on social media: “I got a phone call from the police at 2.30am to tell me to come to the cafe. A large part of the exterior wall had collapsed onto the street.

“The council have had to shut Coronation Ctreet in case the rest of the wall collapses.

“Unfortunately this means we will be closed until the building is made safe.

“Hopefully this will be done quickly by the landlord and we will be able to reopen as soon as possible.

A police spokesman said: “We were called at 2am. The canopy has fallen from the building and bricks have come off with it.

“The whole side of the building has collapsed.

Council were at the scene at around 2.45am. Closures will be in place for the next few days.”

A council spokesman said: “The collapse is under investigation. Building control are at the scene carrying out an assessment.”
