In the past five years, 3,596 Lancashire lasses were punished with £80 fines for nuisance public drinking, police figures obtained by a national newspaper showed.

The figures have sparked concern about the women’s health.

The Lancashire figures, which include Blackpool, places the county second in a national league of shame.

Topping it is Northumbria, where 4,629 fines were dished out, including in Newcastle, home of television show Geordie Shore, which shows off some of the town’s booze-fuelled debauchery.

In third was Merseyside, where Liverpool’s collection of bars and clubs saw 3,410 fines handed out.

Jackie Ballard, chief executive of charity Alcohol Concern, said today: “Binge drinking in particular can put women at risk. Society needs to challenge the idea that drinking to excess equals fun.

“To do that we need to crack down on cheap, strong booze and its constant availability and promotion, as well as encourage pubs and clubs to offer some interesting non-alcoholic alternatives.”
