Resort’s air show was the first in the country

With 2014 featuring important milestones for the Armed Forces including the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War and the 70th anniversary of the D-Day landings, the displays on Sunday August 10 and Monday August 11, will celebrate some of the most iconic names in military aviation technology.

A Spitfire, Hurricane and a Lancaster Bomber will take centre stage in the ever popular Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, while the Red Arrows are also lined up to perform one of the their spectacular aerial shows.

There will also be displays from two local military giants – the BAE Warton built-Eurofighter Typhoon and a fully restored, Blackpool-based ‘Huey’ helicopter. The Huey is an iconic, celebrated American helicopter which played a vital role in the conflicts in Vietnam and Korea.

Coun Graham Cain, Blackpool Council’s cabinet member for leisure and tourism, said: “This year marks the 105th annual Blackpool Air Show and I have absolutely no doubt it will be as fantastic as ever.”

“This is a marvellous event for all the family that runs over two days and is perfect for both local residents and visitors.”

Helen Mansell, vice-president of hoteliers group StayBlackpool, said: “The air show is very good business and it is great it is over two days.

“The Promenade is looking beautiful at the moment, and the air show is a chance to show off all the regeneration and hopefully encourage people to come back.”
