But police closed the road at around 11am. It is believed there has been a fuel leak on the carriageway.

Fire crews were called because of smoke coming from one of the vehicles.

The incident has sparked major traffic tailbacks around the area, with vehicles diverting via Highbury Road East on to Clifton Drive South.

By noon, traffic had also backed up severely on Squires Gate Lane.

The delays have been exacerbated by the continued closure of Wild Lane which links Ansdell and Marton.

The road re-opened around noon.
