£22m Queens Park plan approved

Plans for the first phase of a £22m redevelopment of the Queens Park high rise estate in Blackpool have been approved.

Blackpool Council’s planning committee nodded through the plans, which will see Charles Court and Ashworth Court in Layton demolished to make way for 92 new homes.

The second phase, including the demolition of the remaining three high rises – Churchill Court, Walter Robinson Court and Elizabeth Court – was also backed in principle, with a formal decision deferred to a later date.

Developer Lovell is working in partnership with the council on the scheme.

Demolition is expected to begin later this year with giant cranes due to be used to bring the first tower blocks down.

A report to the planning committee said: “While comprehensively redeveloping Queens Park will not help to increase Blackpool’s housing supply, providing a better choice of quality homes within an attractive residential environment will help towards re-balancing the housing market, regenerating a neighbourhood and supporting more sustainable communities.”
